Maple Grove's developments were built around wetland and storm-water ponds, and a lot of properties back onto one. That is pleasant to look at and it means the low corner of the yard stays saturated well into spring, long after the rest of the lot is workable. Anything installed in that zone has to tolerate wet feet, and scheduling has to respect it — starting a job in that corner in early April usually means tearing up ground that is not ready.

Irrigation is close to universal in Maple Grove, and it is the thing most likely to get damaged during landscaping work. Heads and lines sit shallow along exactly the bed lines people want re-cut. Knowing where the zones run before a spade goes in the ground is the difference between a clean job and a repair call, so we ask about the system before we start rather than after.

Winter takes a measurable toll here and it shows up along the pavement. Maple Grove's wide subdivision streets get salted heavily, and the spray plus the plowed snow that lands on the boulevard leaves a scorched strip of dead turf a few feet in from the curb every spring. The same thing happens along driveways and front walks. Anything planted in that band has to tolerate salt or it will be replaced on a cycle, and the strip usually needs repair work in April rather than in May with the rest of the yard.

The scale of these subdivisions means near-identical houses repeat down a street, and landscaping is one of the few things that distinguishes one from another. That cuts both ways: a well-proportioned front bed stands out immediately, and a bed that has been left to go shapeless is equally obvious next to a neighbour who keeps theirs sharp. Edges matter more here than plant material does.

The worst thing done to trees in residential yards is topping — cutting main leaders back to stubs to reduce height. It produces weak, fast regrowth from the cut points, permanently changes the structure, and leaves a tree that is both uglier and more likely to fail in wind. Over-thinning is the quieter version: a canopy stripped out to look tidy loses the leaf area it needs and responds by throwing water sprouts everywhere. Timing matters too — certain species should not be cut in the seasons when disease pressure is highest, and we will tell you when waiting is the right answer.

Size, height and what is underneath. A limb over a roof, a fence or a driveway has to come down in controlled sections and that takes longer than the same limb over open lawn.
