It was installed to a budget on the day the house closed — undersized shrubs set too close to the foundation, thin mulch, surface-pinned edging — and fifteen years on it is not a base to build from, it is the thing in the way. Clearing it and starting properly usually costs less than working around it.

Stone gets pulled out, the area gets raked over, and then nothing grows there for two years because what is left is compacted subsoil peppered with the stone that did not get picked up. Weight and access drive this one almost entirely. Where a machine and a truck can get close, removal moves quickly; where the stone has to be barrowed out to the street, the same volume takes considerably longer.
