The tree cover here is the heaviest in the west metro, and it decides most outcomes. Under a mature canopy there is not enough light for conventional turf, the leaf volume in autumn is several times what an open lot produces, and roots occupy the top few inches of soil everywhere you might want to dig. Wetland pockets sit between a lot of Minnetonka neighborhoods, and they influence more properties than the ones directly on them. Ground near those low areas stays cold and saturated into late spring, which delays when the yard can be worked at all, and can hold frost long enough that early-season scheduling here runs a week or two behind a drier lot in the same city. There can also be buffer requirements close to protected wetland, which is worth confirming before a project rather than during it.

Lot sizes here are generous enough that most properties have areas nobody uses — a back corner, a strip behind the garage, ground under heavy canopy. Those areas absorb maintenance effort every year and return nothing. Deciding deliberately to let an area go rough, or converting it to something that needs no upkeep, is frequently a better answer than continuing to mow ground nobody looks at.

The worst thing done to trees in residential yards is topping — cutting main leaders back to stubs to reduce height. It produces weak, fast regrowth from the cut points, permanently changes the structure, and leaves a tree that is both uglier and more likely to fail in wind. Over-thinning is the quieter version: a canopy stripped out to look tidy loses the leaf area it needs and responds by throwing water sprouts everywhere. Timing matters too — certain species should not be cut in the seasons when disease pressure is highest, and we will tell you when waiting is the right answer.

Size, height and what is underneath. A limb over a roof, a fence or a driveway has to come down in controlled sections and that takes longer than the same limb over open lawn.
