The single biggest landscaping issue in Maple Grove is what happened during construction. When these subdivisions were graded, the original topsoil was stripped and sold, and yards were finished with a thin layer over compacted clay subsoil. That is why so many Maple Grove lawns thin out in the same spots every July, why beds hold water after a storm, and why simply adding material on top rarely fixes anything for long. Work here usually has to start below the surface — breaking up compaction and bringing in real soil — before anything on top has a chance.

Maple Grove's developments were built around wetland and storm-water ponds, and a lot of properties back onto one. That is pleasant to look at and it means the low corner of the yard stays saturated well into spring, long after the rest of the lot is workable. Anything installed in that zone has to tolerate wet feet, and scheduling has to respect it — starting a job in that corner in early April usually means tearing up ground that is not ready.

Irrigation is close to universal in Maple Grove, and it is the thing most likely to get damaged during landscaping work. Heads and lines sit shallow along exactly the bed lines people want re-cut. Knowing where the zones run before a spade goes in the ground is the difference between a clean job and a repair call, so we ask about the system before we start rather than after.

Winter takes a measurable toll here and it shows up along the pavement. Maple Grove's wide subdivision streets get salted heavily, and the spray plus the plowed snow that lands on the boulevard leaves a scorched strip of dead turf a few feet in from the curb every spring. The same thing happens along driveways and front walks. Anything planted in that band has to tolerate salt or it will be replaced on a cycle, and the strip usually needs repair work in April rather than in May with the rest of the yard.

Mulch over compacted subdivision clay is a cosmetic fix on a structural problem. In a newer development the bed usually needs the ground broken up and amended first, otherwise water sits, roots stay shallow, and the fresh mulch is the only thing that changed.

The two failures we see most are depth and volcanoes. Too thin and weeds come straight through by July; too deep and it holds water. Mulch mounded up against a tree trunk — the volcano — keeps bark permanently damp, which invites rot and rodents and can eventually kill a tree that was fine before anyone landscaped around it. The other one is mulching straight over a hard, matted old layer without breaking it up, which turns the bed into a shed roof that sends water away from the roots.

Price follows volume and access. Square footage times depth gives the yards; the rest is how far that material has to travel from where the truck can sit. A front bed twenty feet from the driveway and a back bed reached only through a side gate are the same mulch and very different jobs.
