Rogers has been the fastest-growing city in Minnesota, and the landscaping market here reflects that almost entirely. Most properties are recent, most yards are the builder's minimum, and the work is first-time installation rather than renovation. That is a genuinely different job from the rest of our service area — there is nothing to undo, but there is also nothing established to build on.

Builder landscaping is installed to a budget and a schedule, and it shows within three years. A thin bed of mulch, a few undersized shrubs set too close to the foundation, and edging pinned at the surface that the first hard frost lifts out. None of it is wrong exactly — it is just the minimum that satisfies a closing, and rebuilding it properly is the most common request we get on newer streets.

The ground under a new Rogers lot is construction fill. Topsoil stripped during grading, heavy equipment across it for months, and a thin finished surface over compacted clay. Grass on that survives a wet summer and fails in a dry one, and the failure looks like bad seed rather than bad ground. Correcting the soil is the step that decides whether anything installed on top of it lasts.

New subdivisions have no canopy. Full sun across the entire property for most of the day, no wind shelter, and the boulevard trees still a decade or more away from providing either. Beds dry faster, new plantings need more water through establishment, and material chosen for a shaded suburban lot does not transfer. Planning for the landscape you have rather than the one it will become in fifteen years is the practical approach.

On new construction mulch installation starts from bare graded ground. There is no existing landscape to work with and no established soil either, so the ground itself has to be built before anything put on top of it will hold.

The two failures we see most are depth and volcanoes. Too thin and weeds come straight through by July; too deep and it holds water. Mulch mounded up against a tree trunk — the volcano — keeps bark permanently damp, which invites rot and rodents and can eventually kill a tree that was fine before anyone landscaped around it. The other one is mulching straight over a hard, matted old layer without breaking it up, which turns the bed into a shed roof that sends water away from the roots.

Price follows volume and access. Square footage times depth gives the yards; the rest is how far that material has to travel from where the truck can sit. A front bed twenty feet from the driveway and a back bed reached only through a side gate are the same mulch and very different jobs.
