Plymouth's advantage is also its landscaping problem: the tree canopy. Homes here kept their oaks and maples, and forty years on those trees now shade the yard for most of the day and fill the top six inches of soil with feeder roots. Sun-loving turf will not hold under that no matter how much seed goes down, and beds cut into root zones dry out fast because the tree drinks first. The honest answer on a shaded Plymouth lot is usually to stop fighting it — shade-tolerant ground, bed lines that respect the roots, and rock where turf was never going to work.

Properties near Medicine Lake, Bass Lake and Parkers Lake often have a high water table, and that shows up as a back corner that never fully dries, a bed that stays sodden a week after everyone else's has drained, and frost heave that lifts edging out of the ground over winter. Working with that is a design decision made at the start, not a drainage problem discovered in June.

Plymouth built out across three decades, so the right answer changes street by street. A 1978 house is on its second or third generation of plantings and usually needs removal and rethinking; a 2004 house is still carrying builder-grade landscaping installed to a budget, where the material was cheap and the soil beneath it was never improved. Same city, same block sometimes, and completely different starting points.

Deer are a genuine planning constraint in the wooded parts of Plymouth, not an occasional nuisance. The two failures we see most are depth and volcanoes. Too thin and weeds come straight through by July; too deep and it holds water. Mulch mounded up against a tree trunk — the volcano — keeps bark permanently damp, which invites rot and rodents and can eventually kill a tree that was fine before anyone landscaped around it. The other one is mulching straight over a hard, matted old layer without breaking it up, which turns the bed into a shed roof that sends water away from the roots.

Price follows volume and access. Square footage times depth gives the yards; the rest is how far that material has to travel from where the truck can sit. A front bed twenty feet from the driveway and a back bed reached only through a side gate are the same mulch and very different jobs.
