Small city lots on a grid, many with alley access, mature boulevard trees, and very little room between houses. Flat, with old established soil rather than the stripped clay of newer suburbs.

The mature boulevard trees along Osseo's older streets are part of what the city looks like, and they are also a constraint. Their roots run shallow and wide, often well into the front yard, so digging a bed line or changing grade near the street can do damage that does not show for two or three years. Where a bed has to go near one of those trees, it goes in around the roots rather than through them, even when that means a less convenient shape.

Scale matters on a bungalow. Osseo's older houses are small and close to the street, and landscaping proportioned for a suburban two-story looks wrong on them — oversized plantings swallow the front of the house and beds cut too deep leave no lawn at all. The work that suits these properties is generally smaller, tighter and more precise than the same budget would buy in Maple Grove, and it looks considerably better for being so.

Snow storage is a real constraint on Osseo's small lots. There is very little front yard to begin with, and what the plow pushes off these narrow streets has to go somewhere — usually onto the same few feet where the front bed is. Plantings near the street take physical damage as well as salt, and low evergreens tend to come out of a heavy winter flattened. Setting beds back from the plow line matters more here than in a suburb with room to spare.

Because the whole city is compact and walkable, front yards are seen at walking pace by neighbours rather than at speed from a car. Detail carries at that distance in a way it does not on an arterial road: the quality of an edge, whether the mulch line is even, whether the hard surfaces were cleaned. Finish is most of what people register on an Osseo street.

Two properties on the same street can still need different work — which is exactly why the estimate is free and done in person rather than quoted off a photograph.

The worst thing done to trees in residential yards is topping — cutting main leaders back to stubs to reduce height. It produces weak, fast regrowth from the cut points, permanently changes the structure, and leaves a tree that is both uglier and more likely to fail in wind. Over-thinning is the quieter version: a canopy stripped out to look tidy loses the leaf area it needs and responds by throwing water sprouts everywhere. Timing matters too — certain species should not be cut in the seasons when disease pressure is highest, and we will tell you when waiting is the right answer.

Size, height and what is underneath. A limb over a roof, a fence or a driveway has to come down in controlled sections and that takes longer than the same limb over open lawn.
