Deephaven's streets are one of the few places in the metro where the landscape is genuinely old — century-old trees, original stone work, plantings established long before anyone currently living there arrived. That is the character people buy here, and it is the thing most easily destroyed by an afternoon of enthusiastic clearing. Work on these properties is careful and conservative by default, and where we are unsure whether something is worth keeping, we ask before it comes out.

Access is the persistent constraint. Streets are narrow, driveways are frequently long and curved, and the ground between where a truck can sit and where the work is can be soft, planted, or both. Material moves in smaller loads over longer distances here than almost anywhere else we work, and that is a real cost that any honest estimate includes rather than absorbs.

The tree canopy here is dense enough to rule out conventional turf across large parts of most properties. Deep shade for most of the day, root plates occupying the top of the soil, and heavy autumn leaf volume are the normal conditions rather than the exception. Planting for those conditions produces something that holds; planting against them produces an annual repair job.

The recurring error on these properties is clearing decisively. Mature material on a Deephaven lot represents decades that cannot be bought back, and an afternoon of enthusiastic removal takes out things nobody would have chosen to lose. Where there is any doubt about whether something is worth keeping, the right move is to stop and ask rather than to keep cutting.

Two failures dominate. The first is light: a sun plant in a shade bed will not thank you for better soil, more water, or fertiliser, and no amount of care overcomes it. The second is spacing — beds planted to look full immediately are overcrowded within three years, and then everything in them competes and declines together. Beds also fail at the edges, where grass creeps in over a line that was never cut deep enough to hold.

Plant material and bed preparation are the two halves. Soil amendment is the part people are most tempted to skip and the part that most decides whether the bed still looks good in year three.
