The tempting shortcut is to dump fresh rock over the tired bed. It looks better for about a season, and then the same weeds come through the same failed fabric, only now there is more material sitting on top of the problem and the eventual fix costs more. The other thing worth knowing is how much comes out: homeowners consistently underestimate the volume of a bed that has been in the ground for twenty years, and the haul-away is often the largest single line on the estimate.
This is a removal job before it is an installation job, so the price is driven by how much material has to come up and leave the property. Beds with heavy root intrusion or buried fabric take longer than the square footage suggests.
