Landscaping in Tonka Bay.

Narrow and water-facing on much of the peninsula, with limited depth and neighbours close on both sides. A peninsula: water on both sides for much of the city, sloping ground, and very little of it flat.

Tonka Bay is essentially a peninsula, and a great many properties have water on more than one side. That means shoreland considerations apply across more of a lot than they would elsewhere, wind comes off the water from multiple directions, and drainage has somewhere to go but gets there fast. It is a genuinely different set of conditions from a lot the same size a mile inland.

Lots here are narrow and deep with the good view at one end, which pushes all the landscaping into a strip. There is rarely room for a large bed or a staging area, so plans have to be efficient rather than expansive, and the detail on a small area matters much more than it would on a property with room to spare.

Wind off the open water is a real factor on plantings and on loose material. Young plants take desiccation damage on the exposed sides, mulch and lighter material move in a way they do not on a sheltered lot, and winter is hard on evergreens facing the bay. Choosing material for exposure rather than for appearance in the pot is what separates a planting that establishes from one that gets replaced.

The rebuilding cycle here has been substantial — a lot of original lake houses have been replaced by much larger homes on the same parcels. Where that has happened the surrounding landscape is frequently a leftover from the previous house, at the wrong scale and in the wrong places. Rethinking the geometry usually improves the property more than adding anything to what is already there.

Access along the narrow peninsula roads is constrained, and where a truck can legally stop is not always near where the work is. Material moves in smaller loads over longer carries, and keeping the road clear during the work is part of the job rather than an afterthought. We establish the route at the estimate so the price reflects it.

Water on both sides of the peninsula means ground here dries early and wind dries it further, so the season starts sooner than inland. It also means summer drought stress arrives earlier, and anything installed in spring needs a genuine watering commitment through its first exposed summer.

The peninsula roads are narrow and there is very little room to stage anything, so timing a Tonka Bay job partly means picking a week when the road can absorb it. Smaller loads over more trips is the normal method here, and it is built into the schedule rather than improvised on the day.

The common error here is choosing plants for how they look in the nursery rather than for what a peninsula does to them. Wind crosses open water from both sides, and material that would be fine on a sheltered lot burns off on the exposed face within a season or two. Selecting for exposure first and appearance second is what gets a planting established.
