Small city lots on a grid, many with alley access, mature boulevard trees, and very little room between houses. Flat, with old established soil rather than the stripped clay of newer suburbs.

Osseo is a hand-work city. The lots are small, the houses sit close together, and on a lot of properties there is simply no route wide enough to get a machine into the back yard — so material moves by wheelbarrow, one load at a time. That is not a complaint, it is a pricing and scheduling reality, and any quote that ignores it is going to change once the crew arrives. The upside is that Osseo has genuine old soil rather than construction fill, so work done properly here tends to establish faster than it does in a newer subdivision two miles away.

Scale matters on a bungalow. Osseo's older houses are small and close to the street, and landscaping proportioned for a suburban two-story looks wrong on them — oversized plantings swallow the front of the house and beds cut too deep leave no lawn at all. The work that suits these properties is generally smaller, tighter and more precise than the same budget would buy in Maple Grove, and it looks considerably better for being so.

The alley is frequently the only realistic way into an Osseo back yard, and that decides a great deal. Access width, whether the alley is paved, and where a truck can legally stop all change what a job costs and how long it takes. It also means neighbours are close on both sides during the work, so we keep the site tight and the alley clear rather than spreading material across it.

The recurring mistake on an Osseo lot is planting for the space available rather than for the house in front of it. These are small houses, close to the street, and material that would sit comfortably against a suburban two-storey overwhelms them within three years. Choosing for mature size on a bungalow is more important than it is anywhere else we work.

We work throughout Osseo, including Central Avenue, the Broadway corridor and the downtown district, and around Jefferson Highway and Central Avenue. Two properties on the same street can still need different work — which is exactly why the estimate is free and done in person rather than quoted off a photograph.

On small older lots flower bed installation is limited by access more than anything else. Where equipment cannot reach the back of the property the work is done by hand, which we account for up front instead of finding out on the first morning.

Two failures dominate. The first is light: a sun plant in a shade bed will not thank you for better soil, more water, or fertiliser, and no amount of care overcomes it. The second is spacing — beds planted to look full immediately are overcrowded within three years, and then everything in them competes and declines together. Beds also fail at the edges, where grass creeps in over a line that was never cut deep enough to hold.

Plant material and bed preparation are the two halves. Soil amendment is the part people are most tempted to skip and the part that most decides whether the bed still looks good in year three.
