Orono properties are large enough that quantity estimates made from the street are consistently wrong. What reads as one bed from the driveway is frequently three times the material once it is measured, and the carry from the truck to the far side of a property can be several hundred feet. Mulch mounded up against a tree trunk — the volcano — keeps bark permanently damp, which invites rot and rodents and can eventually kill a tree that was fine before anyone landscaped around it. The other one is mulching straight over a hard, matted old layer without breaking it up, which turns the bed into a shed roof that sends water away from the roots.

Price follows volume and access. Square footage times depth gives the yards; the rest is how far that material has to travel from where the truck can sit. A front bed twenty feet from the driveway and a back bed reached only through a side gate are the same mulch and very different jobs.
