Minnetonka's defining landscaping problem is buckthorn. The dense wooded lots that make this city attractive are also ideal buckthorn habitat, and on properties that have not been cleared in a decade it has usually taken the entire understory — shading out everything else, holding moisture against foundations, and spreading further every year the berries drop. The tempting shortcut is to dump fresh rock over the tired bed. The other thing worth knowing is how much comes out: homeowners consistently underestimate the volume of a bed that has been in the ground for twenty years, and the haul-away is often the largest single line on the estimate.

This is a removal job before it is an installation job, so the price is driven by how much material has to come up and leave the property. Beds with heavy root intrusion or buried fabric take longer than the square footage suggests.
