Tree & Shrub Trimming in Minneapolis.

Tidy ornamental trees, hedges, and shrubs with careful trimming that improves structure and restores clear lines. Minneapolis is the city itself, worked on the north-west side, with about 425,000 residents, and properties near Victory Memorial Drive and the Chain of Lakes bring their own conditions to a job like this one.

01 The local picture

What tree & shrub trimming looks like in Minneapolis.

City housing: bungalows, four-squares and duplexes largely built between 1900 and 1940, on a tight grid with alleys throughout.

Small, narrow and deep, almost always with alley access at the rear and a boulevard strip at the front. Flat to gently rolling, with real grade around Theodore Wirth Park and down toward the river.

The boulevard — the strip between sidewalk and street — is city land, not yours, and what can be done there is limited regardless of who maintains it. It is also the hardest ground on any city lot: salted all winter, snow-piled on top of that, compacted by pedestrians, and usually shaded by a mature boulevard tree. Treating it as its own problem with its own plant choices is the only approach that works.

Alley access is the defining logistical fact of a Minneapolis property. It is frequently the only way to reach a back yard with anything larger than a wheelbarrow, and whether the alley is paved, wide enough, and clear on the day changes both the cost and the schedule. We confirm the route before quoting rather than assuming one exists.

The housing stock is a century old and built close to the ground, with stone foundations, porch detail and window trim near grade. Overgrown foundation plantings hide precisely the features that make these houses worth looking at, and clearing them back usually improves a property more than anything new that could be planted. The soil beneath decades of dense planting almost always needs rebuilding first.

Street parking, permits and neighbours are part of the job on a city property in a way they are not in a suburb. Where a truck can legally sit, for how long, and whether the alley stays clear all affect the work — and the site has to be kept tight because there are houses a few metres away on both sides throughout.

We work throughout Minneapolis, including Folwell, Willard-Hay, Cleveland and Bryn Mawr, and around Penn Avenue North and Glenwood Avenue. Two properties on the same street can still need different work — which is exactly why the estimate is free and done in person rather than quoted off a photograph.

02 The work itself

How we approach tree & shrub trimming.

Cleaner shapes, better access, and a cared-for appearance.

On a post-war lot tree & shrub trimming is usually a question of what comes out first. Seventy years of accumulated landscaping sits on these properties, the original plantings are long past their intended size, and clearing before installing is most of the work.

  • Neater appearance
  • Cleared walks and sightlines
  • Controlled overgrowth
  • Debris haul-away available
  1. Decide what the cut is for

Clearance, health, shape, or sight lines are different jobs. Cutting without deciding which produces a tree that looks pruned rather than better.

  2. Take the dead and damaged first

Dead, crossing and rubbing limbs come out before anything is done for shape.

  3. Cut to the collar

Cuts made where the tree can actually close them. A flush cut leaves a wound the tree cannot seal.

  4. Respect how much can come off

There is a limit to how much live canopy a tree tolerates in one season, and exceeding it stresses the tree into exactly the decline the trimming was meant to prevent.

  5. Clean up completely

Brush chipped or hauled so the finished job is the tree, not a pile.

03 What goes wrong

Where tree & shrub trimming usually fails.

Worth knowing before you hire anyone, including us.

The worst thing done to trees in residential yards is topping — cutting main leaders back to stubs to reduce height. It produces weak, fast regrowth from the cut points, permanently changes the structure, and leaves a tree that is both uglier and more likely to fail in wind. Over-thinning is the quieter version: a canopy stripped out to look tidy loses the leaf area it needs and responds by throwing water sprouts everywhere. Timing matters too — certain species should not be cut in the seasons when disease pressure is highest, and we will tell you when waiting is the right answer.

Size, height and what is underneath. A limb over a roof, a fence or a driveway has to come down in controlled sections and that takes longer than the same limb over open lawn.

05 Questions

Tree & Shrub Trimming in Minneapolis, answered.

Do you trim large mature trees?

We focus on accessible ornamental trees and shrubs. We will let you know when a certified tree-care specialist is the better fit.

Is cleanup included?

Cleanup is included, and haul-away can be included in your estimate.

Which parts of Minneapolis do you serve?

The north-west side — Bryn Mawr, Victory, Camden, Folwell and the neighbourhoods around Theodore Wirth Park. We would rather be straight about our range than claim the whole city and turn up late from the other side of it.

Can we landscape the boulevard strip in front of the house?

Within limits. That strip is city land and what is permitted there is restricted, quite apart from it being the harshest ground on the property. We will tell you what realistically survives there and what needs checking with the city first.
