Brooklyn Center's ramblers all carry the same original landscape plan, and it has failed in the same way across the city: a row of evergreens across the front, planted a metre from the foundation, now taller than the roofline and pressed against the siding. Those plantings hold moisture against the house and hide most of it. These lots have been mowed, walked and parked on for seventy years, and the soil under the turf shows it. Compaction is the default condition rather than the exception, and it explains most of the thin lawns here: roots cannot get down far enough to survive a dry August, so the same patches fail every year regardless of how much seed goes on them. Relieving that is the step that makes everything after it worthwhile.
