Larger and more irregular than the grid cities to the north, with mature trees and genuine grade on many properties. Rolling and wooded, cut through by Bassett Creek and studded with small lakes — Sweeney, Twin, and the Hidden Lakes chain.

Golden Valley has the most varied ground of any city its size in the west metro, and that makes city-wide generalisations useless here. A property in Tyrol Hills is a wooded slope; one off Winnetka is a flat post-war lot; one on Sweeney Lake is shoreline. What each of those needs has almost nothing in common with the others, which is exactly why an estimate here has to be done on the property rather than from a description of it.

Theodore Wirth Park runs along the eastern edge of the city and the wooded character extends well into the neighbourhoods beside it. Those properties carry mature canopy, deep shade for most of the day, and the leaf volume that comes with it. Turf under that canopy is a losing battle on most lots, and the properties that look best here are the ones that stopped fighting it and planted for the shade instead.

The estate properties in the wooded pockets carry decades of accumulated planting, often laid out by someone who knew what they were doing when it went in. Clearing indiscriminately on those lots destroys value — mature specimen material is worth more than anything that would replace it. The work that pays here is careful: restoring lines, removing what has failed, and leaving what took forty years to establish alone.

Bassett Creek runs through the middle of the city, and properties along it sit close to protected water. Work that changes grade or clears vegetation near the creek can carry watershed requirements, and that is a conversation to have before a project rather than during one. It is rarely an obstacle, but it is much cheaper to establish in advance.

On a post-war lot mulch installation is usually a question of what comes out first. Seventy years of accumulated landscaping sits on these properties, the original plantings are long past their intended size, and clearing before installing is most of the work.

The two failures we see most are depth and volcanoes. Too thin and weeds come straight through by July; too deep and it holds water. Mulch mounded up against a tree trunk — the volcano — keeps bark permanently damp, which invites rot and rodents and can eventually kill a tree that was fine before anyone landscaped around it. The other one is mulching straight over a hard, matted old layer without breaking it up, which turns the bed into a shed roof that sends water away from the roots.

Price follows volume and access. Square footage times depth gives the yards; the rest is how far that material has to travel from where the truck can sit. A front bed twenty feet from the driveway and a back bed reached only through a side gate are the same mulch and very different jobs.
