Landscaping in Crystal.

Small to modest, laid out on a regular grid, with consistent setbacks and easy street access. Flat throughout, with Bassett Creek the only meaningful water feature and very little natural slope anywhere.

Crystal is as flat as anywhere in the metro, and on flat ground water does not leave — it sits. Low spots in a Crystal back yard stay wet for days after a storm because there is nowhere for the water to go, and that is the single most common reason a lawn or a bed fails here. Fixing it is a grading question, not a planting question, and adding soil or seed without addressing it just repeats the problem on a slightly higher surface.

The story-and-a-half homes that make up a lot of Crystal have a specific landscaping problem: low eaves and a shallow front. There is very little depth between the house and the sidewalk, so beds are narrow by necessity and anything that grows tall enough to reach the eave has to come out. Plant selection matters more here than bed design, because there is no room to correct a mistake by moving it back.

These lots have old soil rather than construction fill, which is genuinely good ground to work with. Seventy years of leaf litter and root activity have built structure into it that a graded subdivision lot does not have. What that soil often lacks is air — decades of foot traffic and mowing compact the surface, so opening it up is usually more useful than adding to it.

Crystal was built at a density that leaves little room between houses. Side yards are narrow, gates are standard width, and getting material to a back yard frequently means barrowing it down a strip a few feet wide. That is normal here and we plan for it, but it is the reason a Crystal back-yard job takes longer than the same square footage out front.

Mature boulevard trees line most of these streets and their canopies now meet over the road. That shade reaches well into the front yards, so turf that thrived when the trees were young struggles now, and the usual response of reseeding every spring is money spent on ground that has fundamentally changed. Beds or shade-tolerant ground cover under those canopies is the answer that actually holds.

On flat ground the spring start depends entirely on how a specific lot drains rather than on the calendar. A Crystal back yard with a low corner can be unworkable for a fortnight after neighbouring properties have dried, and starting on it early does more damage than waiting does. We set the date from the wettest part of the property.

Crystal Airport sits inside the city and the ground around it is open and exposed in a way the rest of these blocks are not. Properties on that side take more wind, dry out faster in summer, and give young plantings a harder first year. It is a small difference on a map and a real one in a garden.

Homeowners here regularly treat a wet corner as a planting problem. It is a grading problem, and no amount of soil amendment or plant selection fixes ground that has nowhere to drain to. Establishing where water actually goes before deciding what to put in the area saves repeating the same disappointment on a two-year cycle.
